Kamloops Ribfest 2018

We attended Kamloops Daybreak Rotary’s Ribfest, August 10th, 11th, and 12th.

The event was 3 days, located in Riverside Park in Kamloops BC.  What a busy city it was!!  They combined the Ribfest with their local Show & Shine, as well as included many sponsors and partner businesses in the event itself.  The live music was a great touch as well!

Don’t let the event name fool you… there was much more than ribs!  Chicken, ribs, brisket, pulled pork, mini donuts, and corn on the cob!

We started our testing with a BBQ called House of Q.   At first glance, they seemed to have it all together, a catchy name, great marketing, and a very professional presence at the fest.  With all this, we were quite disappointed.  The ribs were incredibly bland, but the pulled pork and brisket were.. alright.  Our food also came with coleslaw, and we were split on our decision on it!  One of us liked it the best, the other, not so much!   One thing that was very smart, was that this BBQ had a little side tent where they were selling sauces and cook books from, and you could taste all of their sauces.  Other BBQ’s only had sauce, and you had to wait in the food line up to purchase sauce.

Next,  we tried Smoke & Bones.  With their awards for best brisket, we knew it was a must have!  Once again, we got brisket, ribs, pulled pork, and coleslaw.  The sauce was much better than the last one, and the brisket was definitely good, but it was their presentation that we weren’t pleased with!  The container it was in, had clearly been dropped, or put somewhere that was an absolute mess!  Once again a split vote on their coleslaw as well.

As you can imagine, that was a lot of meat!  We weren’t able to taste everything, so we purchased as many BBQ sauces as we could on our way out.

As we were in line for sauce from Prairie Smoke & Spice, we decided, we might as well get some ribs to go while we are here… and boy are we glad we did!  By far the best from the weekend.  We will just have to go back next year to try the rest!

Overall, it was a great event!  Kids activities, dragon boat racing, farmer’s market, artisan market, HUGE car show, live music, beer gardens and food! Great job done by all of the volunteers and organizers.
